Some 10 years ago I first heard the word — Modi — the Modi script, thanks to a land dispute at my native place. We had to refer to a year 1887 document and it was written in Modi script. That document was very important to my family… but the problem was nobody knew how to understnd and interpret it. Fortunately, there was this very very very old guy in an adjacent village who happened to know Modi, and rest is history… sort of; I mean we won the case.
I don’t want you to tell you about the case. What I want to tell you is hundreds of thousands of documents related to our (Marathi) history (school leaving certificates, administrative documents, etc) are written in Modi script. And there are very few people who know the script. I remember a newspaper ad 5 years back by Government of Maharashtra seeking help from whoever knows and understands Modi.
But, but then there is Internet, Orkut… I stumbled upon this community on Orkut where a bunch of enthusiasts are learning and spreading the wod about Modi and as you might have guessed I have already become a member
. I also found this very interesting and useful website related to some of the ancient languages and scripts across the world.
Hope you find this information useful.
